When Should You Schedule Your Newborn Session?

The ideal time for a newborn photo shoot is when your baby is between 5 to 14 days old. During this time, they’re usually still very sleepy and can curl into those adorable, womb-like poses that parents love.

Tip: It’s best to schedule your session while you’re still pregnant—usually during your second or early third trimester—so we can pencil in a flexible date around your due date.

What to Bring (and Prep) for the Session

You don’t need to bring much, but having these essentials on hand will make the experience even smoother:

  • Diapers & wipes(I have extras just in case needed)
  • Extra baby clothes (plus a change for yourself!)
  • Pacifier, even if baby doesn’t use it much—it can help during posing
  • Blankets or special items you’d like to include in photos
  • I supply snacks and water for you but you're always welcome to bring your own as well! (It’s a long session and you deserve it!)

If we’re shooting at your home, try to warm up the room ahead of time to help your baby stay cozy and sleepy. I'll be bringing a small space heater to help and heating pad.

What to Wear

For parents: I always recommend soft, neutral tones like ivory, beige, blush pink, or soft blues. These colors photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby.

For baby: I provide a variety of wraps, headbands, hats, and textures, but if you have a special heirloom outfit or keepsake blanket, let’s use it!

Avoid:

  • Busy prints or logos
  • Bright neon colors
  • Anything uncomfortable (comfort = calm baby)

What Happens During the Session?

Newborn sessions typically last 2 to 3 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, and soothing breaks.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • A quiet, calm environment
  • Gentle posing techniques that prioritize your baby’s comfort and safety
  • A mix of posed and lifestyle shots (if desired)
  • No stress—we go at your baby’s pace ❤️

This is a time for you to relax while I take care of the magic behind the lens.

BEFORE YOU HEAD TO YOUR SESSION

Keep Baby Awake: A little playtime before the shoot will help your baby stay asleep longer during the session. Can be before you leave your house or while on the way to my studio.

Comfortable Clothing: Wear something simple and comfortable, and if you’d like to be in some shots, neutral colors work best. YOU'RE ALWAYS WELCOME TO GET READY AT MY STUDIO! I have a restroom with great lighting.

A Personal Note from Me

As a newborn photographer in the Houston area, it’s an honor to capture these intimate moments for families. Every session is different, and I bring a lot of patience, care, and love into each one. Many parents tell me how peaceful and joyful the experience was—and that makes my heart full.
